ZEROBASEONE Ascend-: ZB1’s Five-Member Comeback Rewrites the Group’s Future

ZEROBASEONE Ascend-: ZB1’s Five-Member Comeback Rewrites the Group’s Future

ZEROBASEONE is turning a difficult reset into a clean, confident statement. On May 18, 2026, the group releases its sixth EP, Ascend-, the first project from its five-member lineup of Sung Hanbin, Kim Jiwoong, Matthew Seok, Kim Taerae and Park Gunwook. The timing makes the record more than another comeback. It is a public test of identity, sound and fan trust.

A Five-Member Restart

In interviews held in Gangnam ahead of release day, the members framed the change as a new beginning rather than a loss. Sung Hanbin told Asia Business Daily, “What hasn’t changed are our passion and the intensity in our eyes.” That line captures the album’s message: the format has changed, but the engine remains intact.

Why Ascend- Matters

The title points upward, while the hyphen signals continuity. Korea JoongAng Daily reported Hanbin’s explanation that the mark represents how the group is carrying on as five. That small symbol gives the release its emotional center. ZEROBASEONE is not closing the story. It is extending it.

‘Top 5’ Chooses Restraint

The lead single, “Top 5,” reworks early 2000s dance pop through contemporary R&B and a minimal instrumental. WakeOne described it as a modern reiteration of that era, while the visuals lean into lighter makeup and casual styling. Instead of chasing excess, this comeback sells control and maturity.

Gunwook’s Creative Step Forward

The seven-track EP also puts member participation in sharper focus. Park Gunwook wrote, composed and arranged “Customize,” his first self-produced song for a ZEROBASEONE album. The Korea Herald reported that the group listened to around 30 to 40 demos while shaping the record.

The Comeback Stakes

For ZB1, Ascend- is a comeback with pressure built into every frame. It must reassure longtime fans, define the quintet’s chemistry and prove that a smaller lineup can still feel expansive. If “Top 5” lands, ZEROBASEONE may turn reorganization into momentum and make its second act feel deliberate.
