After years of girl groups dominating the charts and public attention, the industry is gearing up for the “Year of the Rookie Boy Group.” Major entertainment agencies and legendary producers are racing to launch new male acts, signaling a strategic pivot that could redefine the next generation of K-pop. SM and YG Entertainment Enter the Fray

SM Entertainment is set to introduce its first new male act in three years, following the success of Riize. The company’s trainee team, tentatively named “SMTR25,” will be gradually unveiled through the Mnet reality show “Reply High School.” In a bold move, SM plans to experiment with artificial intelligence to assist in selecting songs for the group’s promotional activities, blending cutting-edge technology with traditional idol training.

Meanwhile, YG Entertainment is also preparing to launch its first new boy group since Treasure debuted six years ago. Founder Yang Hyun-suk confirmed the plans on the company’s official blog, targeting a fall 2026 debut. While details about the lineup and musical concept remain under wraps, expectations are high for YG’s signature hip-hop infused style.

The Return of Legendary Producers

Adding to the excitement is the return of SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man. After a three-year non-compete clause ended last month, the veteran producer is preparing to unveil a new boy group consisting mainly of Korean and Chinese members. Expected to debut in the first half of 2026, this group will target both domestic and global markets, marking Lee’s first new boy group project since NCT.

Another highly anticipated debut comes from former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin. Currently operating through her new agency, Ooak Records, Min is preparing a boy group that promises to break away from conventional frameworks. This move sets the stage for a symbolic rivalry with her former label, adding a layer of industry drama to the upcoming debuts.

ADOR’s Global Search for Raw Talent

Not to be outdone, HYBE’s ADOR label has announced the “2026 ADOR Boys Global Audition.” As reported by Korea JoongAng Daily, the auditions will span 11 cities worldwide, starting in Seoul on March 21 and traveling to locations including New York, Tokyo, and Sydney. Open to males born in 2007 or later, ADOR is seeking raw talent and innate appeal across various fields, from singing and dancing to vlogging and photography, mirroring the successful approach used to form NewJeans.

With these heavyweights all throwing their hats into the ring, 2026 is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive and thrilling year for K-pop boy groups. Fans worldwide are eagerly waiting to see which of these rookies will rise to the top and lead the next era of the industry.
