PLAVE HYPERDRIVE Hits No. 31 on Billboard 200: Chart Record Explained

PLAVE HYPERDRIVE Hits No. 31 on Billboard 200: Chart Record Explained

PLAVE’s fifth mini-album HYPERDRIVE debuted at No. 31 on the Billboard 200 dated October 31, 2026, the virtual idol group’s highest placement on the U.S. albums chart so far, Soompi reported on October 27. The same week it opened at No. 1 on both Top Album Sales and World Albums, according to Starnews Korea.

Key facts

  • Album: HYPERDRIVE, PLAVE’s fifth mini-album, five tracks, title track “Star Trace”.
  • Billboard 200: No. 31 (chart dated Oct. 31), up from No. 145 for Caligo Pt.2.
  • Billboard firsts: No. 1 on Top Album Sales and World Albums, the group’s first time atop either chart.
  • Korea: 1,322,973 first-week copies on Hanteo (Oct. 13–19), a group record.
  • Next: the KEEP IT MANIC world tour plays Macau on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, then Los Angeles on Nov. 14.

What PLAVE Released: HYPERDRIVE and “Star Trace”

HYPERDRIVE arrived digitally at 6 p.m. KST on October 12, with physical copies following on October 13, per Kyunghyang Shinmun’s English edition. It is the group’s first new release in about six months, after Caligo Pt.2 in April.

Reports disagree on one detail. The Korea Times and JoongAng Daily give the release as Oct. 19, while Soompi, Herald and Kyunghyang describe Oct. 12 digital and Oct. 13 physical, which matches the Oct. 13–19 Hanteo sales window. This article uses the Oct. 12 and 13 dates.

The title track “Star Trace” is described as PLAVE’s first EDM-based dance-pop song, with layered synths and a driving beat, in both the Kyunghyang and Bandwagon write-ups. Its lyrics deal with cosmic love and trust, tying PLAVE and fans across the fictional worlds of Asterum and Terra.

The EP covers more ground than the lead single suggests:

  • “Star Trace”: EDM-based dance pop (title track).
  • “Kkun” (charted by Billboard as “GGUN”): a dreamy bossa nova track.
  • “Timely Rain in the Blue Sky” (charted as “Sweet Rain”): a guitar-led rock track.
  • “The Answer Is Yes”: bright, upbeat pop.
  • “Rewind”: a romantic R&B pop closer. Per Kyunghyang, it is the group’s first song with outside composers, Kenzie and the team KZLAB.

Star Trace Music Video and Performance

The “Star Trace” video follows a racing concept. The promotional rollout split the members into two rival teams, with Bambi and Eunho as Yataz and Hamin, Yejun and Noah as Madbazz, according to Kyunghyang. Racing suits, jackets and goggles run through the visuals.

The group performs as virtual avatars, but Bandwagon notes that real performers drive the music, choreography and movement in real time through VLAST’s technology. That live-performance element is why a stage clip carries as much weight as the music video for this group.

Billboard Chart Record: Every Placement

The full chart picture comes from Soompi’s Billboard breakdown and Starnews Korea. All entries below are for the chart dated October 31, 2026, unless noted.

  • Billboard 200: No. 31, the group’s first top-40 entry and second appearance overall.
  • Top Album Sales: No. 1 (first time).
  • World Albums: No. 1 (first time).
  • Emerging Artists: No. 1, a re-entry at a new peak.
  • Artist 100: No. 25, up from No. 75 with the previous release.
  • Independent Albums: No. 4, per Starnews Korea.
  • Global Excl. U.S.: “Star Trace” No. 32, “GGUN” No. 55, “Sweet Rain” No. 57, “The Answer Is Yes” No. 66, “Rewind” No. 105.
  • Global 200: “Star Trace” No. 84, “GGUN” No. 128, “Sweet Rain” No. 130, “The Answer Is Yes” No. 170.

“Star Trace” first entered the Billboard Global 200 at No. 68 on the chart dated October 24, beating the group’s earlier best of No. 138 from “BBUU!”, Starnews Korea reported. It slipped to No. 84 in its second week on the chart.

Herald Business reported that HYPERDRIVE was the highest-ranking K-pop-related album on the Billboard 200 that week. That claim appears in only one of the outlets reviewed, so treat it as that outlet’s reading of the chart.

How the rest of K-pop fared on the same chart

The Korea Times and JoongAng Daily listed the neighbors. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack sat at No. 35, KATSEYE’s Wild at No. 39, BTS’s Arirang at No. 46 in its 31st consecutive week, and Stray Kids’ This & That at No. 93. On the Hot 100, JENNIE and Tame Impala’s “Dracula” ranked No. 8 in its 22nd week in the top 10, and KATSEYE’s “Animal” stood at No. 30 (see our earlier coverage of “Dracula” in the Hot 100 top 10 and BTS’s ARIRANG run on the Billboard 200).

Sales, Background and Growth

Soompi reported that the physical album sold 1,322,973 copies in its first week on Hanteo, October 13 to 19. That beat the previous record of 1,255,801 set by Caligo Pt.2, and it is the group’s fourth album to pass one million in a first week, after Caligo Pt.1, PLBBUU and Caligo Pt.2.

Right after release, the title track and the other songs took the top five spots on Melon, Genie and Bugs, Kyunghyang reported. Starnews Korea adds that the debut was a long climb: PLAVE debuted in March 2023 with “ASTERUM,” which sold fewer than 30,000 copies in its first week, and Caligo Pt.1 in February 2025 was the first virtual idol release to pass one million first-week copies.

We looked at the group’s growth earlier in our piece on the virtual K-pop boom, and this chart result adds a U.S. data point to that argument. Another jirasi chart story from this week covers Stray Kids’ run atop World Albums, a chart PLAVE has now topped as well.

How Fans Are Reacting

The clearest fan signal so far is activity on PLAVE’s own channel. The group posted a Star Trace fanchant guide and a run of “Catch the emojis” member clips tagged #PLAVE_StarTrace, all on the official YouTube channel. When checked on October 28, individual member clips from that series showed roughly 25,000 to 55,000 views each, for example 54,919 for Yejun’s and 31,580 for Bambi’s.

We did not read through comment sections or social posts for this article, so there are no fan quotes here. Fan-reaction claims in this piece are limited to the official-channel activity and chart behavior above.

What’s Next for PLAVE

The KEEP IT MANIC world tour, the group’s first, began in Korea and has already played Singapore on October 17 and Taipei on October 23 and 24. The remaining dates confirmed by Starnews Korea and Kyunghyang are Macau on October 31 and November 1, and Los Angeles on November 14. Bandwagon places the Los Angeles show at Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

No further release has been announced in the sources reviewed.
